A House in Venice occupies a corner lot in Venice, California — a house for a small family.
The plan turns as a pinwheel around a central landscape court. Each ground-floor room takes one arm of the wheel, and every one of them opens onto the same piece of planted ground, so light and garden reach the whole floor rather than a favoured side. Hosting works the same way: the rooms run together around the court when the house is full, and close back down to a house for the family when it isn’t.
Material carries the division between public and private. The ground is built of stone — heavy, cool, holding the rooms that receive people. Above, the private rooms sit inside a slatted wood volume that reads as a lantern after dark, filtering light out and privacy in. A corner lot exposes a house on two sides; the slats let it be open and closed at once.
